Frequently asked questions
System boilers are central heating boilers that directly heat your central heating system to produce hot water through a storage cylinder. Unlike some traditional boilers, system boilers are closed systems that contain all the components needed for heating within the unit itself, including the pump and expansion vessel – so you don’t need a separate feeder or expansion tank. However, you will require a separate hot water cylinder to store hot water – often this is stored in the loft or an airing cupboard.
If your current boiler is broken, we’ll aim to get you back up and running as soon as possible. Depending on stock availability, some models can be ordered for next day installation, and a typical system boiler install takes as little as 1 to 2 days for a standard replacement in the same location, but could take 2 to 4 days for a more complex installation, e.g. if we have to upgrade your heating system components or add a hot water cylinder.
If you are upgrading to a system boiler from a combi boiler, the new unit may be larger than your existing system. This would depend on the boiler you pick and also how old your current boiler is. Modern boilers of all types tend to be more compact than older models. Generally, you will need a larger overall footprint for a system boiler to accommodate the separate hot water cylinder, but the actual ‘boiler system’ in a system boiler is often smaller than a combi. If you are unsure, please get in touch with one of our experienced team.
Most new boilers come with a five-year manufacturer’s warranty, but this is dependent on the boiler you pick. Some have warranties of up to 10 years.
Again, lifespan depends on the brand and model of the boiler. A high-quality modern boiler should last you at least 10 to 15 years, as long as it is regularly serviced. Entry-level models may need earlier replacement. Investing in quality will also decrease your lifetime cost of ownership by minimising repairs and servicing requirements.

How much does it cost?
High-quality system boilers are available to suit most budgets, and the type you need will depend on the size of your home and the number of hot water outlets the boiler has to serve. System boilers can be fuelled by gas, oil, or electricity, e.g. from renewable power sources. Secure your new boiler with a 40% deposit upfront, with the balance due on installation.
System Boiler vs Combi Boiler
System Boiler
A system boiler can feed various hot water outlets – e.g. shower, kitchen, bathroom – simultaneously without losing pressure. This means you are less likely to scald someone in the shower if you switch the hot water tap on in the kitchen!
vs
Combi Boiler
Combi boilers, on the other hand, provide both hot water and heating on demand, and are ideal for smaller homes, single bathroom properties, or apartments with lower hot water demand. Combi boilers have a generally compact footprint and do not require separate hot water cylinders. However, when serving multiple bathrooms, a combi may struggle with water pressure, and you are limited by the capacity of the boiler to supply multiple outlets at once.
