A radiator that is hot at the top but cold at the bottom is one of the most common heating complaints we get in Sutton.
In our experience, it is usually caused by sludge (magnetite) building up in the system, a circulation issue, or a valve problem. This guide explains how to tell the difference, what you can safely check, and when it is time to call an engineer.
Cold at the top: often air trapped in the radiator
Cold at the bottom: often sludge or restricted flow
It is not a perfect rule, but it is a helpful starting point.
Over time, corrosion inside the system can create black sludge. It settles in radiators and reduces heat transfer.
Signs:
Radiators take ages to warm up
Some rooms never get properly warm
Boiler or pump is noisier than it used to
If the system is not balanced, some radiators get most of the flow while others struggle. This is common after upgrades or radiator changes.
TRVs can stick after summer. A stuck pin can stop hot water entering the radiator.
A tired pump, a blocked filter, or restrictions can reduce circulation across the system.
If the top is cold, bleed the radiator (with the heating off, and a cloth ready).
Check the TRV is turned up.
If you are comfortable, remove the TRV head and see if the pin moves freely.
If you are not confident, do not force anything.
Book a visit if:
Multiple radiators are cold at the bottom
The issue keeps coming back
You have noisy pipework or boiler sounds
Cleaning the system and adding inhibitor
Cleaning or fitting a magnetic filter
Balancing the system
Powerflush only when it is genuinely needed
